The original king of swing returns.
Great news for those who thought that Spiderman would be improved by adding a bit of gunplay. Not too long from now Capcom will invite players to swing between cityscapes while shooting at each other with bazookas. Bionic Commando, after a 20 year delay, is back.
Set 10 years from the original (which makes it 10 years back from now) you play as Spencer, a betrayed government agent on the trail of some ruthless terrorists. Generic plot aside, this game is split into two main sections: swinging and gunning. Spencer’s left arm is bionic and he uses this to swing all about the city while firing away with his right arm.
The bionic arm is quite useful for combat as well. Shoot your claw out towards your enemy, jump into the air and reel yourself in feet-first towards the terrorist, knocking him off his feet. Once he collapses to the floor you can pick up his gun and fire away at the rest of the, now alerted, terrorists.
The swinging bits at this point are a bit of a concern. It’s very easy to attach your bionic arm to an object, but it is swinging and jumping from that object to the next that is very tricky. If this is intentional to keep it in close perimeters to the 20-year-old 8bit version, or just to keep it hardcore, it does not really work all that well. Some kind of auto lock-on would be a welcome addition.
Capcom rarely disappoints and we reckon they will get the small quibbles fixed when the game launches. For now, we think it would be best that you stick to Spiderman for the time being.
